I attended Moulin Rouge at the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah, this weekend. Let me tell you: It is hands-down the best theater I’ve ever seen. If you’re looking for some great music in Utah, this is one show you shouldn’t miss.
Arts and music in Utah
It’s amazing to even see a production like Moulin Rouge on the schedule in Utah β even Salt Lake City. I sometimes forget how far Utah has come in the last couple of decades. Major props to the Eccles Theater and Salt Lake City for hosting a musical with such bawdy content and a rather anti-capitalist message as well.
In general, Utah music and art has really been coming into its own. Bands like The Used, Imagine Dragons, and Neon Trees are straight out of Utah β and the murals that dot Salt Lake City are beautiful and often unexpected in the Mormon capital of the world.
The Eccles Theater
The Eccles Theater itself puts on an amazing show. The stage was big, bright, and beautiful throughout the entire production. Scenes seamlessly transition from one to the other. And no matter where you were in the audience, you could count on seeing everything thanks to the theaters unique way of stacking rows.
The sound was equally impressive. It was never too quiet or too loud. There was no terrible room echo. Everything was crystal clear from start to end. Parking was also super accessible and exiting the theater after the performance was surprisingly easy and quick.
The theater itself is beautiful inside and out. The theater proper feels rather classic with its burgundy, red, and velvet, while the rest of the building feels fresh and modern.
Moulin Rouge
In regard to the musical itself: WOW. The set design was intimately artistic, the lighting vibrant and fun, the costumes bold and creative, and the actors all incredibly talented β disappearing into their roles.
The musical rocked a blend of both original music and popular songs from the 90s and 2000s. But everything bled together seamlessly and nothing felt forced or out of place. It was all moving, fun, and wonderful to hear.
The choreography was absolutely stunning to watch, as well. The dancers never missed their marks and even the transition from one scene to another felt impeccably choreographed and baked into the musical itself.
