I started Open Door Policy to share music and foster community. For a while now, I’ve been finding the grind of booking shows and playing more in Ogden and Salt Lake City than I do in my own hometown to be a bit exhausting and disappointing. Because of the distance and our general bandwidth, making sincere, authentic, ongoing connections with fans, bands, and venues outside of Cache Valley is always an uphill battle.
So instead of trying to book shows down in the SLC area all the time, I’ve been toying with the idea of organizing small, intimate shows here in Cache Valley on a recurring basis. These shows would feature new Open Door Policy music and local Utah bands we really want to spend more time with and share with people up here in Logan.
So what is the Open Door Collective?
The Open Door Collective is basically a fancy name for you – the people who give Open Door Policy purpose and support. Essentially, it’s going to be friends getting together to dance, chill, and enjoy each other’s company.
How does this all work?
I’m still working out the details, but I’m essentially envisioning shows where people pay a suggested $15 donation to get into the show. This money would cover the venue, sound, security, and guest bands. Open Door Policy wouldn’t take much, if any of this money. More likely, we would try to sell merch at these shows to invest in band maintenance and upgrades.
I’m also not sure yet if these kind of shows would be all-ages, 21+ BYOB, or alternate between these formats. Nor am I sure if we will remain at one venue, or source different venues throughout Cache Valley.
But I do hope that, whatever we do, we can build something fun and special here in Logan and the Cache Valley area to share with the people we love!
