Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): Content Marketing
What is content marketing?
Content marketing, sometimes called “organic marketing,” is the “unpaid” side of marketing – blogs, videos, podcasts, webinars, social media, and even live events. Unlike paid ads, content marketing builds lasting relationships and long-term visibility through consistent, helpful, and original content.
Why does content marketing matter?
Because it drives real, measurable results:
- +400% website traffic
- +200% organic leads
- +130% more Google clicks
- +15 spots higher in SEO rankings
- +411% YouTube growth
It’s not just about clicks — it’s about connecting solution-seekers with solution-providers and building trust that leads to sales.
Isn’t content marketing expensive? How much do you charge?
It’s not expensive compared to what you lose by skipping it – or only running paid ads. Content can be scaled to fit a solo creator or a full team. It’s flexible, more cost-effective than ads over time, and creates compounding returns through SEO, brand visibility, and lead generation.
I typically charge $45/hour freelance – though I can custom build packages at a discount if you have specific goals or objectives in mind (for instance: A 5-article SEO blog package for $1,500). If you’re hesitant about the price tags here, please do reach out to talk shop. I am happy to provide some advice and provide direction at no charge. And if you’re a non-profit or working with content I am passionate about, there is room to negotiate payment.
Additionally, if you are looking to hire me as a W2 employee, my pay rate is extremely negotiable.
What makes content marketing effective?
The most impactful strategies combine:
- Blogs – for search engine optimization (SEO) & AI visibility (GEO / AIEO)
- Podcasts & videos – for trust, discovery, and repurposing
- Webinars & livestreams – for live audience engagement
- Social media – for community-building and reach
- Live events – for face-to-face trust and connection
What kind of ROI can I expect from your content marketing services?
At my last client, I achieved the following:
- +389% website traffic
- +209% organic leads
- +130% Google search clicks
- +315% stream performance on top podcast episodes
- Showing at the top of Google search results much more often
- Content featured by ChatGPT, Google Snippets, and Gemini
What’s the catch?
- It’s not magic: Great content can’t fix a bad product or a dysfunctional sales funnel.
- It needs buy-in: Content must be aligned with product, sales, and customer insights.
- It must be original: Generic content gets ignored. Authenticity wins.
- Bottom line: I need to be embedded in your company – and have access to your data, team, partners, and customers.
What tools should content marketers use?
My general toolkit consists of:
- Riverside.fm – Quickly record, edit, publish, and repurpose podcasts and video
- ChatGPT + NotebookLM – Organize research, write content, and generate ideas
- Adobe Suite + Canva – For graphic design, infographics, visual elements, etc.
- Hubspot + Moz + Google Search Console – For performance analysis.
- Google Suite + Microsoft Suite – For collaborative drafts, outlines, etc.
- Asana + Notion – Plan and manage content calendars
- Otter.ai – Transcribe audio quickly and accurately
- Opus Clips – Create shorts from long-form video
- WordPress + Webflow – For CMS and publishing
I am also experimenting and seeing great results with emerging tools like AirOps and Perplexity.
Should I use AI in content marketing?
Yes, but with guardrails:
- DO: Use AI to brainstorm, organize, transcribe, and repurpose.
- DON’T: Let AI do all the thinking. If you use it for everything, your content will sound generic and won’t rank or resonate.
What’s Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO (also known as AIEO) is about optimizing content for AI-driven search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. That means:
- Creating semantically rich content
- Answering specific user questions
- Offering original insights, stats, and stories
How do I get more value out of my podcast or video content?
Use the long tail strategy I’ve built:
- Break long episodes into 5–10 min segments
- Generate blog articles from transcripts
- Create shorts using tools like OpusClip
- Build SEO-optimized playlists
- Post natively to every relevant platform
One podcast episode can fuel weeks of social media and blog content.
Who should own content marketing?
Someone embedded in your org – not siloed. Your content marketer needs access to:
- Internal data
- Subject matter experts
- Product, sales, and customer feedback
This is how you build content that actually converts.
How do I stand out in Google search results, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, etc.?
- Tell real stories about real people
- Use proprietary data, real quotes, and original research
- Avoid AI echo chambers – don’t remix; create
- Align content with high-intent search queries
Why should I trust content marketing?
Because content is about helping people. It’s how people find the answers they’re looking for, and how your business becomes the solution they trust.
Why are you putting your marketing business on your band’s website?
I want everyone who is potentially thinking of hiring me to know what I’m all about. That is heavily reflected in the music I write and the things I discuss via Open Door Policy’s platform. I realize this means I won’t get as many prospective clients through my open door.
But the ones who want to connect after learning more about me? We are going to get along very well and have much longer, healthier, and stronger relationships than we’d have with other partners. And I look forward to that!
What’s your logo all about?
I thought long and hard about how I wanted to represent myself in a logo. Given my rock music background, a closed fist with a microphone seemed like a good starting point! But, as you can see, there’s a few more elements than that…
Here’s a breakdown of what each part of the logo means:
- The closed fist represents solidarity – with you, my client. My mission is your mission.
- The pencil represents my ability to craft compelling content aligned with your goals.
- The ruler represents my commitment to measuring results and iterating on data.
- The microphone represents the way I can amplify your voice and get you heard!
