Yesterday, I mentioned that Open Door Policy was closely watching the situation regarding WhySound, Hartebeest, etc. At the time, I believed that the steps we had taken would be enough to foster a safe environment for our show.
Today we have learned troubling new details – which have been independently verified. I am going to be vague on details to protect myself and my sources (you will also notice I’ve redacted the names of those mentioned in yesterday’s statement for the same reason).
Sufficeth to say, while it sounds like the incident took place years ago, it still shakes my faith in WhySound’s leadership. And I do believe, especially now that I have more clarity, that our show cannot continue as planned.
I will be the first to admit that I’ve done terrible things in my past – much of which has been lost to my memory in a black hole of trauma, drugs, and alcohol. That said, I have tried my best to take accountability, become a better person, and make amends – that has meant listening to those I hurt, allowing them to tell their stories, and making requested behavioral changes.
I encourage all the accused in this expanding situation to do the same.
But the key thing here is that victims must be heard for that to truly happen. I hope both yesterday’s statement, and today’s statement, will help boost that chorus. And I hope all those involved will do what’s right for those impacted and the wider music community.
Thank you,
Casey Rock and Open Door Policy
